With increasing miniaturization, micromilling of complex structures is gaining importance, but the machining of difficult-to-cut tool steels is limited by high tool loads and rapid tool wear. The proposed DFG project therefore investigates a thermally assisted micromilling process in which small workpieces are heated homogeneously to reduce material strength, cutting forces, tool wear, and burr formation, with the aim of identifying optimal process windows for productive machining with minimal impact on workpiece properties.
