Compliant micro-machining tools are particularly relevant for the finishing of complex surfaces that are characterized, for example, by a surface structure or filigree contour elements. The challenge in machining these surfaces is to remove micro-defects and roughness while at the same time avoiding structural and contour changes. Diamond-coated foams are among the compliant micro-machining tools for such applications. The application behavior and thus the process result are not only dependent on the process parameters and the process control, but are also significantly influenced by the properties of the tool, such as the diamond grain size or the flexibility of the carrier material.
